During this examination, the fallopian tubes are contrasted and their patency is assessed. On site, echogenic foam (a gel-like structure) is prepared from highly purified water and a contrast agent contained in a syringe. Using a special ultra-thin catheter, the foam is slowly introduced into the uterine cavity in very small amounts. During the procedure, the distribution of the foam within the abdominal cavity is monitored on the ultrasound screen. If the foam does not pass into the abdominal cavity on one side (or both sides), the fallopian tubes are considered blocked.
