The procedure is performed under local anesthesia in an operating room or a doctor’s office. A needle is inserted into the testicle to aspirate sperm cells. In some cases, TESA does not yield a sufficient number of sperm cells, and an open testicular biopsy (Micro-TESE) is required. With the help of an embryologist, the motility of the collected sperm cells is restored in a special medium. The most motile sperm cells are then selected and used for further assisted reproduction procedures.
