After assisted reproductive procedures, depending on the woman’s age and the quality of the embryos, between one and three embryos are transferred into the uterus, while the remaining embryos are frozen. Frozen embryos are used if pregnancy is not achieved during the “fresh” cycle or when the couple plans to have more children in the future. The transfer of thawed embryos helps avoid repeated assisted reproduction procedures and the use of ovarian stimulation medications. In this way, the woman’s health is better protected. Importantly, embryo freezing also helps reduce the risks associated with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
