Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess abdominal skin and fatty tissue, strengthen the abdominal wall, and improve the overall abdominal contour. Changes in the abdominal wall may develop following pregnancy, significant weight changes, aging, or separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti). During the procedure, excess skin and subcutaneous tissue are removed, and the separated rectus abdominal muscles may be tightened when diastasis is present. When appropriate, the procedure can be combined with liposuction to further refine the contours of the abdomen and waist. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, with the extent and technique tailored to the patient's individual anatomy and desired outcome.
