Implants may be replaced due to changes in breast shape, implant rupture or displacement, capsular contracture, fluid accumulation around the implant, or other implant-related changes. The previous incision is usually used to access and remove the existing implant. Depending on the individual situation, the surrounding capsule or tissues may also require correction, and the procedure may be combined with a breast lift. New implants can be placed behind the chest muscle, behind the breast tissue, or partially beneath the muscle. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
