About the packageThe anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), one of the four major knee ligaments, is an important stabilizer of the joint that connects the femur to the tibia and prevents the tibia from shifting forward. When the ACL tears, the joint loses stability, the menisci are damaged, and joint friction increases. Without surgery, the risk of joint osteoarthritis increases. In addition, the patient would have to give up the sport they practice and an active lifestyle.
During the surgeryThe surgery is usually performed under regional or spinal anesthesia, or various combinations of these. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is performed arthroscopically, during which a new ligament is created from the patient’s own tendons. The new ligament is fixed in place with implants. At Kardiolita clinics, absorbable implants are used, which dissolve on their own within 2–3 years. The procedure lasts about 1–2 hours.
After surgeryAfter the surgery, the patient is transferred to the intensive care unit for observation for a few hours, after which treatment continues in the inpatient ward. Typically, after this surgery, the patient can go home the next day. A rehabilitation course is required after the surgery. The goal of rehabilitation is to strengthen the thigh muscles and restore range of motion. The ligament fully attaches within the bone tunnels in 8–12 weeks.
